FRONTALIS:-

Origin- aponeurosis
Insertion- over eyebrows
Action- raises eyebrows (“Surprise”)

OCCIPITALIS:-

Origin- occipital bone
Insertion- aponeurosis
Action- fixes aponeurosis; draws scalp posteriorly

ORBICULARIS OCULI:-

Origin- maxilla; frontal bone
Insertion- eyelid
Action- closes eyes

NASALIS:-

Origin- maxilla
Insertion- skin on bridge of nose
Action- wrinkles nose; dilates nostrils

LEVATOR LABII SUPERIORIS:-

Origin- maxilla
Insertion- upper lip
Action- raises upper lip

LEVATOR ANGULI ORIS:-

Origin- maxilla
Insertion- angle of mouth
Action- elevates angle of upper lip (“smiling”)

ZYGOMATICUS:-

Origin- zygomatic bone
Insertion- corner of the mouth
Action- elevates and abducts upper lip (smiling w/ teeth)

RISORIS:-

Origin- masseter; platysma
Insertion- angle of the mouth
Action- abducting angles of mouth

CORRUGATOR SUPERCILIOUS:-

Origin- nasal bridge
Insertion- skin of eyebrows
Action- draws eyebrows together

ORBICULARIS ORIS:-

Origin- maxilla; mandible
Insertion- angles of mouth
Action- closes lips (kissing muscle)

DEPRESSOR LABII INFERIORIS:-

Origin- mandible
Insertion- lower lip
Action- depresses lower lip

DEPRESSOR ANGULI ORIS:-

Insertion- angle of mouth
Action- depresses angle of lips (frowning)

MENTALIS:-

Origin- mandible
Insertion- skin of chin
Action- protruding lower lip; wrinkles and elevated chin

BUCCINATOR:-

(Muscle of the face)

Insertion- angle of mouth
Action- compresses cheek; retract angle of mouth

PLATYSMA:-

Origin- fascia of chest
Insertion- mandible
Action- tenses skin of neck (shaving); pulls lower lip down

AURICULAR:-

Origin- aponeurosis; mastoid process
Insertion- ear
Action- moves ear sup, inf, and ant.

PROCERUS:-

Origin- bridge of nose
Insertion- frontalis muscle
Action- wrinkling of the eye

MASSETER:-

Origin- zygomatic bone
Insertion- ramus of mandible
Action- prime mover of jaw closure

TEMPORALIS:-

Origin- temporal bone
Insertion- coronoid process
Action- closes jaw

BUCCINATOR:-

(muscle of mastication)
Origin- maxilla; mandible
Insertion- angle of mouth
Action- keeps food in teeth

PTERYGOIDS:-

Origin- sphenoid bone
Insertion- mandible
Action- sliding of jaw

INFRAHYOID:-

Origin- clavicle; manubrium; scapula
Insertion- hyoid bone
Action- depresses larynx & hyoid during swallowing

SUPRAHYOID:-

Origin- mandible; temporal bone
Insertion- hyoid bone
Action- anchors tongue; elevates larynx & hyoid

STERNOCLEIDOMASTOID:-

Origin- sternum; clavicle
Insertion- mastoid process
Action- head flexion & rotation

SCALENES:-

Origin- cervical vertebrae
Insertion- first 2 ribs
Action- head flexion & rotation; elevates ribs 1 & 2
